Shadow and Bone (The Grishaverse #1) by Leigh Bardugo

35384793Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy.

four stars

I feel like my review is going to a bit rambly and quite over the place.

That’s right, I finally read something by Leigh Bardugo! This book had been on my TBR for so long that it grew cobwebs on it. And……. I liked it!!

Now I’m not going to lie, this did have some YA clichés that you see a lot. Girl in love with best friend, doesn’t know that she had powers, oh and a love triangle. Sarcasm aside, I quite enjoyed this book with all of the clichés. There were times that it did get a little slow for me but I pushed past it.

The world building was great! I loved her fluid writing and detail about the different kind of Grisha.

I’m so glad that Alina came into her power and became stronger. She was a little difficult to like in the beginning because she came off a bit whiny and weak, but by the end she grew on me. I liked seeing her go head to head with The Darkling.

Notice how I’m not really saying anything about Mal? He was okay. Not swoon worthy and a little boring. Why is he a love interest at all? I didn’t feel a drop of chemistry between him and Alina.

“The Darkling would not hesitate. He would not grieve. His darkness would consume the world, and he would never waver.”

I feel like The Darkling is misunderstood. I know, I know. I always defend the villain. I always go towards them in books I read. But honestly, The Darkling was my favorite out of this whole book. I want to know more about him and see what makes him tick.

Like I said there was a bit of a love triangle here. Mal was alright and all BUT, I cannot be the only one who ships her with the Darkling! Am I? Oh well, I’ll be the pirate on this ship.

Overall, this book did have twists and turns and for the most part I really enjoyed it. I have already ordered Siege and Storm and can’t wait to see what happens next!

  1. Mal does pale in comparison to the Darkling’s strong aura 😀 And nope, you’re definitely not the only one who ships them! I can’t wait to read how you feel about the next books in the series!!!
